Oxfam in Kenya and partners produce an edutainment skit, hold a townhall to discuss GBV in the domestic sector

December 20, 2024

On 29 November 2024, Oxfam partnered with artist Crazy Kennar to create an edutainment skit aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) against domestic workers. The skit resonated with the public, garnering over 3,000 reactions.

Meanwhile, on 6 December 2024, Oxfam, in collaboration with the Nation Media Group, organized various activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism. A key event was a townhall held in Kibra, bringing together over 100 participants from civil society organizations, local communities, and local administration. The discussion focused on promoting decent work and addressing GBV in the domestic work sector. The panel included a domestic worker who highlighted the often-overlooked challenges faced in the sector, a representative from the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals, and Allied Workers, who emphasized the union’s role in protecting domestic workers’ rights, a representative from the State Department of Gender who shared updates on care development initiatives in the country, and Oxfam, which showcased ongoing efforts to advance gender equality within the domestic work sector.

It was also during this time that Oxfam published a video that highlighted how the recent GenZ movement in Kenya increased care responsibilities for women.
