NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION
Africa Leadership Foundation or ALF
AREAS OF OPERATION
ALF operates out of Ogun State, Nigeria, but has regional contact across all African Union (AU) Member-States, especially within the African Union Commission.
BRIEF HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
ALF is a multidisciplinary, knowledge-driven organization founded by H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in 1988. Through strategic partnerships and innovative programs, the ALF aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and global frameworks contributing to Africa’s development.
ALF’s work is structured under three key arms:
- Center for Governance and Capacity Development: Strengthening governance, democracy, and leadership across Africa and building the leadership capacity of African youths. The Center has built the leadership capacity of over 1,000 youths through its DLTW program and has supported four African countries to strive toward achieving conflict free elections and transparent democracy.
- Center for Gender Equality and Research: A core pillar of its work is the promotion and protection of the rights of women and girls in Africa, particularly through advocacy on unpaid care and domestic work, women’s leadership, and gender equality and women’s empowerment agenda. The Center has, through its influence at the regional level, advocated and supported AU member-states in implementing gender instruments, such as the SDGEA, Maputo Protocol, and CEVAWG.
- Center for Entreprise Development: Supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by providing various financial and nonfinancial support that targets improving their economic and decision-making power. The Center has built the economic capacity of almost 40,000 SMEs from over 15 African countries and has facilitated business support funds of over USD 14 million.
The ALF has managed several complex multimillion dollar projects covering different thematic areas in partnership with the AU, Afreximbank, Oxfam in Africa, GIZ, MSD for Mothers, Plan International, GIMAC Network, AfCFTA, UN Women, UNDP, UNFPA, IDEP, and AU ECOSSOC, among many others.
