NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION
Association of Women in Agriculture Kenya or AWAK
AREAS OF OPERATION
AWAK works in Mombasa, Kenya.
BRIEF HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
Legally registered in Kenya as a women-led and women-focused nonprofit under Section 10 of the Societies Act, AWAK is driven by a powerful vision: to empower 5 million small-scale rural women farmers, vulnerable women, and youth in urban informal settlements over the next decade. We believe in their potential to be leaders in food security and climate action, fostering their long-term social and economic well-being. Because when women thrive, communities thrive.
AWAK was born from the understanding that scaling up agribusiness – moving from basic farming to climate-smart agriculture, boosting urban food security, adding value to products, and advocating for change – is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across Kenya.
Our core belief is that these vital interventions will not only transform Kenyan communities but also make significant strides in climate action, women’s economic empowerment, and the realization of the food security goals within Kenya’s Big 4 Agenda.
THEMATIC FOCUS
Food security, women’s economic empowerment, climate action and climate justice, advocacy, policy, and partnership
