January 31, 2025

WE-Care partner Network of Ethiopian Women’s Association (NEWA) and Asham TV, a privately owned national media outlet, in collaboration with Oxfam in Ethiopia, organized a televised panel discussion on unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW) in January 2025 in Amharic, Ethiopia’s national language. A team of expert panelists, including representatives from NEWA (Programme Manager – Mistir Alebachew) and Oxfam in Ethiopia (Project Coordinator – Dilu Gashaw), conducted the discussion, which was broadcast as part of Asham TV’s women-focused programming.

To address the national issue of UCDW and its impact on women and girls, this one-hour televised panel discussion was held. Panelists argued that UCDW is a critical barrier to gender equality and women’s rights in Ethiopia, with far-reaching consequences for women’s social, economic, and political lives, and for national development as a whole.

The discussion also included the presentation of key facts and evidence derived from the national time-use survey, regarding UCDW activities among people in Ethiopia. The panelists further elaborated on the roles and responsibilities of various actors—households, government, private sector, and civil society organizations—in addressing UCDW. They also discussed and reflected upon the existing efforts, progress, achievements, and challenges related to UCDW.

The televised panel discussion on UCDW was estimated to have reached thousands of viewers nationwide, raising significant awareness on the issue. The recorded session has been uploaded and is available on Asham TV’s YouTube channel, which boasts approximately 128,000 subscribers.
