Local WROs strengthen advocacy for unpaid care work in Ethiopia
Local women’s rights organizations (WROs) and other civil society organizations (CSOs) in Ethiopia have boosted their capacity to advocate for the recognition and value of unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW), following a two-day training organized by WE-Care partner, the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA).

Held on 22 to 23 May 2025, in Addis Ababa, the workshop centered on a newly developed Amharic manual. The training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and strategies necessary to foster a robust social movement addressing UCDW. A key objective was to empower attendees with effective advocacy techniques to amplify women’s voices and drive systemic change at various levels.
Throughout the engaging sessions, approximately 24 representatives from various WROs and women’s associations actively participated in strategic planning exercises. These exercises were specifically designed to enhance their ability to influence policymakers and key community stakeholders on issues related to UCDW.
This vital training marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to advance WE-Care’s comprehensive 5R framework. This framework seeks to promote the recognition, redistribution, reduction, representation, and fair rewards for UCDW, ultimately contributing to greater gender equality and economic justice.
