Members of Mombasa County Assembly approve building of childcare centers in county markets across 6 wards

As WE-Care deepens its advocacy efforts toward care-friendly policies and infrastructure in Kenya, WE-Care partner Association of Women in Agriculture-Kenya (AWAK) held a sensitization workshop on care legislation and representation of UCDW agenda, which was attended by the women caucus Mombasa County Assembly (MCA) at the Traveler’s Beach Resort in March 2024.
The objective of the workshop was to raise the awareness and understanding of the participants on the importance of UCDW and its impact on economic development among the County Assembly Women Caucus. The workshop also aimed to sensitize them on the challenges faced by women in balancing UCDW tasks with other social, economic, and political activities.
Through these efforts, AWAK is excited to note that the MCA committed to establish a childcare center at the assembly to be funded by the Women Caucus. The members of the said caucus have also proposed the establishment of childcare centers in county markets across six wards. Furthermore, the MCA had earlier presented a motion that was tabled in the county assembly for the establishment of childcare centers in all departments of county government.
According to Judy Matu of AWAK: “This is the beginning of a gender transformative journey for Mombasa County, where care is prioritized and caregivers empowered.”
