NEWA is operating primarily in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but has extensive reach at the national and regional levels.

BRIEF HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

NEWA is a nonpartisan and nongovernmental network established in 2003. Born from the collaboration of 13 local organizations and associations, NEWA provides a powerful, unified platform for advancing women’s rights in Ethiopia. Our core purpose is twofold: to bring together the diverse work of women’s associations into a cohesive and impactful collective, and to lead robust public campaigns advocating for gender equality. Today, our network comprises 50 strong member organizations.

To maximize our impact, NEWA prioritizes strengthening the internal technical and managerial capacities of both our network and our member organizations, ensuring efficient and effective program delivery.

With a legacy spanning three decades, NEWA has been a leading force in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls across Ethiopia. We are committed to generating crucial evidence, implementing strategic advocacy initiatives, and ensuring that the critical challenges faced by women and girls are brought to the forefront for policymakers and development partners to address.

NEWA is deeply committed to upholding the trust and credibility we have built with our members, government counterparts, donor partners, and the Ethiopian women we serve.
