UWONET holds successful high-level dialogue on UCDW

The High-Level Dialogue on Unpaid Care and Domestic Work (UCDW) was a success, as panelists and participants shared and reflected on emerging narratives on UCDW to inform advocacy initiatives and collectively identified alternative policy proposals (e.g., investing on alternative fuel sources, lowering taxes on energy-saving equipment, reforming marriage laws, and revising National System of Accounts 2025 to include UCDW) for the Government of Uganda.
According to UWONET Executive Director Rita Aciro: “Unpaid care work is an invisible barrier to women’s economic empowerment and participation in public discourse, yet it’s as important as the money economy. There is need to change the mindset of appreciating care work as an important aspect of economy.”
In the same event, Ms. Rita Namuddu of the Finance Trust Bank applauded UWONET’s efforts and said that the dialogue has come in so handy, as she is concerned about the condition of women that work in diaspora yet return with nothing after getting exploited. Owekitibwa Nakazzi Fatuma of the Buganda Kingdom likewise thanked UWONET for always engaging cultural leaders like herself and urged her fellow cultural leaders to create more awareness in recognizing UCDW. She said: “Education is a powerful tool to address and change people’s perception.”
