BRIEF HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

YAK was founded in 1999 as a community-based group and later registered as a national NGO in 2003. It emerged from informal discussions among young university students in Kenya, aiming to create a platform for youth empowerment and advocacy. Initially focused on HIV and AIDS awareness in 2000, YAK expanded its programs by 2007 to address health, justice and human rights, democracy and governance, and environment and livelihoods.

Today, YAK works at both policy and service delivery levels to advance youth engagement in governance, economic empowerment, and social justice. The organization envisions a society where young people actively contribute to development and promotes advocacy, mentorship, and capacity-strengthening initiatives across Kenya.

THEMATIC FOCUS
