Youth leaders in Kenya advocate for care and inclusion in the Youth Bill 2024

December 21, 2024

On 17 December 2024, Youth Alive Kenya convened a webinar with 54 youth leaders from Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Mombasa, and Uasin Gishu counties to explore the Youth Bill 2024. The session focused on its potential impact on young people engaged in unpaid care and domestic work (UCDW), a critical but often overlooked aspect of youth livelihoods.

Young people in Kenya shoulder a significant share of UCDW affecting young women and limiting their access to education, economic opportunities, and decision-making spaces. Recognizing these challenges, the webinar aimed to unpack the bill, identify gaps, and propose actionable solutions to ensure the care agenda is integrated into youth policies.

By the session’s conclusion, youth leaders contributed key recommendations which formed the basis of a memorandum submitted to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports. This memorandum seeks to address the intersection of youth policy and UCDW, emphasizing the need for equitable policy frameworks. Participants also called for more forums to unpack legislative proposals citing a lack of awareness as a barrier to meaningful youth participation in policymaking.
